WELCOME TO GRADE 5 & 6!  On this page students and parents of my Grade 5/6 EFI class will find resources and information to help them be successful in class this year.  You can read about your homework expectations. Yes, you will have homework this year, but my hope is that it is a fun and engaging experience for all.  As a parent of two young children I know how busy life can get.  You are always more than welcome to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Also, if you're looking for handy tips on helping your child at home please click on the following link from the Ontario Ministry of Education. There are a number of fantastic resources here in multiple languages so please feel free to explore them.

Homework Expectations
Picture
Homework for students in Grade 5/6 will be assigned on Monday and is expected to be completed and handed back in to me on Friday.  Students have been given a Red Homework Folder for this purpose. As such, please encourage your child to use good time management skills to complete their homework by planning ahead, if you have after school commitments.  We will be focusing heavily on Responsibility and Independence this year as your child continues to develop the necessary skills to be a successful life-long learner.

I've added an outline of what students can expect as homework below.  To check what is specifically assigned to them please click on the Classroom Calendar (listed under the Grade 5/6 tab) and check the upcoming Friday.  I have included the Homework for the Weeks on the Calendar so please take a look.  I would also encourage you to subscribe to the Calendar by clicking on the +Google Calendar button on the bottom right of the Calendar.  This will allow you and/or your child to easily check what homework is due by simply opening up your devices calendar.

LANGUAGE
Students will be expected to complete their English home reading each night by spending a minimum of 20 minutes reading.  A Reading log will be provided in the Red Homework Folder for students to log their reading at home each night.  If you need access to a digital copy, one is available here, for download.  Writing about their reading is another aspect of your child's homework.  Students will be required to keep a Reader's Notebook which will be handed in according to the schedule listed on our Classroom Calendar.  Also, if you are looking for additional tips on helping your child with Reading please click here.

MATH
Students will also have weekly Math concept review based on the 5 different Math Strands of the Ontario Curriculum.  It is important that your child practice these skills at home and that they come to school every day ready to push their mathematical thinking.

OTHER
From time to time there will be additional tasks that your child may need to complete for homework.  As always, the best place to check what is due is to refer to the classroom Calendar.
